Abstract: Sea ice dynamics remains one of the most uncertain factors in the earth system model's ability to address the climate change problem. The difficulty in accurately and efficiently solving numerically the associated highly nonlinear partial differential equations is believed to be a big contributor to this uncertainty. In this work, I will talk about a general description of viscous-plastic sea-ice equations, and show how we solve these equations discretized by the backward differentiation formula 3, by the Jacobian-free Newton Krylov solver.
