Abstract: Recently, numerical simulation has been gaining importance as a tool for the characterization of complex flows, such as those occurring in spillways. There are a several types of these spillways; in this study we will discuss the issues in relation with side weir spillway[1], [2]. The lateral outflow mechanism of side weirs is investigated using physical and numerical modelling (3D). In particular, the effects of flow depth, approaching velocity, lateral outflow direction, slope, discharge head, discharge coefficient and the water surface profile.
